Mother of Delhi paramedical student, Nirbhaya, who was brutally gang-raped in 2012, has welcomed the ordinance brought by the government to make rape of an under 12 girl punishable by death. But she has demanded that every rapist should be hanged regardless whether the victim is under 12 or not.
“It is a good step, but what about ones who are older? There is no more heinous crime than rape, there is no larger pain. Every rapist should be hanged,” Asha Devi was quoted as saying by ANI.
The Centre on Saturday approved the ordinance to award death sentence to the rapists of children below the age of 12. Following a meeting of the Union Cabinet in New Delhi, the government cleared the amendment in the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Kathua rape case has invoked a lot of sentiment in people and it’s was the public pressure that perhaps forced the government to bring the ordinance. Some are calling it a knee-jerk reaction to douse the nationwide unrest over Kathua rape case in which an eight-year-old child Asifa was gang-raped and murdered.
“This is a politically calculated move in an election year. Time and again, research has shown that harsh penal measures have only increased instances of the offence, as opposed to acting as a deterrent,” Bharti Ali said to DNA.
